I took to tapping out these reports on a manual typewriter, and mailing them to constituents, over the four years I served on the Rochester City Board of
Education (2006-2010).
These reports were NOT financed by the taxpayers, were cheaply produced, and were mailed out as I could afford (priority given those most likely to be interested in the topic covered). For better or worse, I wrote every word myself, the opinions expressed are mine alone (no board commissioner has individual authority) -- and the reader was/is happy to discover the reports are not filled with pictures of me (like the "reports" you DO pay for from Albany or Washington).
In the current media climate, you have to sift and evaluate many divergent sources of information. These newsletters are just one more voice in that choir, and try and let you see how it looked from the inside, to one citizen board member, while I was there.

The Smugtown Beacon, a feisty little political blog, made light of the write-in and the heated nature of school issues. They compared our 1208 write-in votes with the high write-in total for NYC Mayor (27 votes for Mr. Burns of The Simpsons). Around the same time, City Council Vice President William Pritchard left a threatening and abusive voice mail at my home, in reply to mailer that made the same points about Mayoral Control I make here-- so much for school board dysfunction. Mr. Pritchard now lives in Penfield. I'm just sayin’…
